Local MP Mark Pawsey is encouraging families to swap four wheels for two feet this Walk to School Week.
Part of National Walking Month, a month dedicated to celebrating the benefits of walking, Walk to School Week (18-22 May) is an opportunity for parents and children across the UK to try doing the school run on foot.
Living Streets runs the national Walk to School campaign, and the national charity says parents who walk their children to school find the journey less stressful. They also say their petrol bill goes down, their children perform better at school and that they, and their children, feel healthier and fitter. Teachers even report that those pupils who walk to school are more attentive once they reach their desks.
Walking to school is a brilliant way to get active and healthy. It’s also a great opportunity for children to learn vital road safety skills and make sure they’re alert and ready to learn at the start of a new day.
More than one million school pupil, parents and teachers took part in Walk to School Week 2014 – and this year is shaping up to be even bigger.
Mark said:
“Walking is a great way for young people to keep active and healthy. It also helps them to experience their local area, gain self-confidence and learn vital road safety skills.”
Mark concluded:
“I am thrilled to be supporting Living Streets’ Walk to School Week this year and hope that parents and children from across Rugby & Bulkington will join me in backing the initiative and encouraging their children to get walking now and set healthy habits for the future.”
