Mark Pawsey MP welcomes Bill which supports UK hauliers
Mark Pawsey MP has declared his support for the HGV Road User Levy Bill which will impose a charging system on foreign trucks using UK roads.
At present foreign hauliers pay no UK Vehicle Excise Duty enabling them to fill up on cheaper fuel on the continent before coming to the UK and then using UK roads for free.
In comparison UK hauliers’ trucks are often charged road tolls on the continent to pay for the maintenance and upkeep of European roads whilst European companies pay no such charges in this country.
Mark said:
“This Bill will level the playing field for our hauliers and bring fairness to a system which presently favours their European counterparts.”
Mark continued:
“Rugby is a national centre for logistics and we have many excellent companies in our area which employ thousands of people. I am fully supportive of anything the Government can do to help the industry develop and expand and I hope this will lead to the creation of additional jobs here in Rugby in the future.”
Mark concluded:
“Trucks cause significant wear and tear on our roads and so it is only fair that European companies using our roads pay road tax. The additional income will enable the Government to maintain the excellent standard of our road network system.”
