On Thursday 18th July 2013 Rugby MP Mark Pawsey delivered a speech in the House of Commons on the issue of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are an increasingly popular alternative to the conventional cigarettes, and users believe they significantly help to give up smoking for good. Mark spoke in reaction to a proposed EU directive that would significantly reduce their availability.
Speaking during the debate, Mark said:
“The directive is a great concern to a business based in my constituency of Rugby, Smoke no Smoke. Its entrepreneurial owner, Jim Lacey, is facing a threat to the future of the business he has worked so hard to build up”.
Speaking after his speech, Mark said:
“This EU directive has the potential to stop thousands of people from being able to use e-cigarettes as they will become more expensive, less innovative and less appealing. Jim Lacey and Smoke no Smoke in Rugby have built up a fantastic business and I will continue to do all I can in Westminster to make sure e-cigarettes can remain available”.
Mark concluded:
“E-cigarettes are an enjoyable consumer product that has the benefits of being far healthier than conventional cigarettes. At a time when many people are saying they are able to quit smoking for good with the use of these e-cigarettes, and so saving the NHS millions of pounds, I am urging the Government to look more closely at this issue”.
