Rugby MP Mark Pawsey last week voted for a bill that could lead to lighter evenings in the UK.
The Daylight Savings Bill, put forward by MP Rebecca Harris, would require the government to launch an inquiry into the benefits of moving clocks forward by an hour throughout the year – effectively extending British Summertime (BST) through the winter to save money and energy for homes and businesses across the UK.
Campaigners for the move have claimed that the Bill could create up to 80,000 jobs in tourism and leisure, boost the economy by up to £3.5bn each year and has the potential to prevent 100 road deaths every year by making the evening rush hour lighter.
Mark said: “I believe this is an issue which deserves to be implemented. If the move towards an extended BST can create jobs, help in the efforts to tackle climate change, save Rugby households and businesses money, boost tourism and prevent accidents on our roads in the winter evenings then it will be a worthwhile change.”
Mark joined MPs in voting to progress the Daylight Savings Bill to Committee Stage where the details of the proposals will be further debated.
