Rugby MP Mark Pawsey has welcomed Government funding to build more affordable homes in Rugby. In the current year, the Government is providing an incentive to Rugby Borough Council for building New Homes in the form of a grant of £893,255 to be spent broadly across the Borough in addition to its budget.
The New Homes Bonus is a multi-billion pound programme that rewards communities when they accept more house building in their area. The Bonus includes an extra reward for building new affordable homes, and for getting long-term empty homes back into use.
Mark said:
“I am delighted that here in Rugby we enjoy the benefits of a progressive Council in it’s attitude toward the development of new housing. In providing new housing we provide a stimulus to our local economy; we enable our young people to find their first home; we help to preserve the future of our town centre, and now, through the New Homes Bonus, we are also able to obtain a substantial Government grant at the same time. Taken together, these measures mean it is the right course of action for us here in Rugby that we get on with attracting and building new homes in our area.”
Mark continued:
“The last Government led Britain into a housing crisis when the number of affordable homes fell, waiting lists almost doubled and first-time buyer numbers collapsed to their lowest level for a generation. By contrast, the new Government is on the right lines. House building is already up a quarter, but there is still more to do. I am delighted to be able welcome this funding for new homes in Rugby.“
