Local MP Mark Pawsey recently visited the Swan Centre branch of Ladbrokes in the town centre to speak to staff and customers about the industry. As part of the visit, Mark was invited by Area Manager Julianne Charvill to place a £50 stake, paid for by Ladbrokes, on the Cheltenham Gold Cup with any winnings being donated to a charity of Mark’s choice. Having selected the horse Road to Riches, Mark’s each way bet produced a win of £75 which has been donated to the Friends of St Cross.
Mark said:
“The gambling industry is a big one in this country and I was happy to visit their Rugby store to speak to staff to learn more about it. It was interesting to speak to both staff and customers about the gambling industry and how we can support it but still maintain appropriate regulation and ensure that if people chose to gamble they do so responsibly.”
Mark continued:
“The offer of a stake for charity was a very generous one, and I felt that with the Government’s long-term economic plan showing its success, the only choice of runner was Road to Riches! I am pleased it was placed and I am delighted to donate the money to the Friends of St Cross which is such a worthy local charity.”
Nigel Chamberlain, Ladbrokes Regional Manager said:
"It was great to meet Mark and have the opportunity to demonstrate the community spirit that our staff and customers all share, high street betting shops are founded on being hubs of the community"
Mark concluded:
“I was very pleased to be able to meet with Cllr Kathryn Lawrence, who works with the Friends of St Cross, and present the £75 winnings to her on behalf of Friends of St Cross. They do such good work for our local hospital and I’m always more than happy to support them in any way I can.”
