Rugby MP Mark Pawsey has recently highlighted the danger of the use of illegal number plates in a recent Westminster discussion.
After being contacted by a concerned Rugby constituent, Mark has brought the matter to the attention of Ministers in Westminster.
Speaking in the House of Commons Mark said:
“Many individuals use plates which are illegal by virtue of their character, position and appearance and by the addition of bolts in order to create a name or word. That has serious implications for the identification of vehicles used in criminal activity, particularly where the police are using automatic number plate recognition systems.”
Mark added:
“For many making slight alterations to number plates is not a big deal but the effects of such actions can be far worse than people will imagine. Number plate recognition cameras greatly assist the police when searching for cars that are used in criminal activity or that, for example, do not stop after being involved in an accident.”
Mark concluded:
“We must ensure that the law is obeyed in regards to the nature of number plates and I know that police forces across the country are extremely vigilant when it comes to looking out for illegal plates. I do hope, however, that by speaking about this issue more people will be aware that altering their own number plates is illegal and I look forward to more being done to tackle the problem.”
