On Wednesday, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey joined with a number of fellow MPs in a meeting that saw them step up their campaign in asking the Government to reverse the decision to disband the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Since the meeting, the group has written to the Prime Minister asking to discuss this issue with the Defence Secretary, and has also called for a debate on the subject in the House of Commons.
Mark said:
“The 2nd Fusiliers are an important part of our region’s history and indeed employment. Many people in Rugby and in Warwickshire have historic connections with the 2nd Fusiliers and I will continue to do all I can in Westminster to deter the disbandment”.
Mark continued:
“It is a matter of fact that the previous Government left this country with a £38 million ‘hole’ in the defence budget, and I am aware that this Government needs to balance the books for the sake of our next generation”.
Mark concluded:
“However my colleagues and I remain committed to state their case, and will keep championing the role of the 2nd Fusiliers and the positive effect they have on our local community and employment. I hope that the meeting with the Defence Secretary is able to take place and will have a positive outcome”.
