Local MP Mark Pawsey is helping to raise awareness of the Warm Homes Campaign, which is promoting easy ways to help households in Rugby keep warm this winter after the weekend’s heavy snowfall.
Smart Energy GB and National Energy Action met with MPs including Mark in parliament last week to talk about some of the help available to families struggling with fuel bills this winter. These include: getting advice about energy efficiency improvements, checking if you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount or installing a smart meter to better monitor your energy usage.
Although more than 8.6 million smart meters have already been installed across Great Britain, many more homes in Rugby could still benefit from this new technology. Upgrading to a smart meter does not mean an additional cost and they show how much gas and electricity you are using in near real time, as well as what it is costing in pounds and pence. Information is displayed on an in-home display and allows consumers to see exactly how much the next bill will be, and make informed choices about their energy use.
Mark commented:
“Particularly following this weekend’s snow and ice, I know that keeping the family home warm will be a priority for residents throughout Rugby. Smart meters can help by putting the customer in control of what they spend on gas and electricity, without worrying about estimated bills.”
Mark continued:
“I would encourage everyone to visit Smart Energy GB’s website or to contact their energy supplier today to learn more about how they can upgrade to start using a smart meter. Local residents can also call the Warmer Rugby helpline, run by Rugby Borough Council in partnership with the charity Severn Wye Energy Agency, to get advice on their individual circumstances. The number is free to call and available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday on 0800 500 3076.”
Mark concluded:
“Another thing that local residents can do in order to save money on their fuel bills is to switch providers. Last year, over 6,500 people in Rugby took advantage of a better deal by switching and people can save hundreds of pounds, especially if you have been with the same supplier for a long time.”
