Local MP Mark Pawsey is searching for residents of Rugby to nominate local champions to be Rugby’s Olympic Torchbearer.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is looking for 8000 Torchbearers to carry the Olympic flame across the country. Nominees are required to provide 150 words on why they would like to hold the torch and how they have gone beyond their ‘personal best’ in any walk of life.
Nominees can be as young as 12, and nominations will be considered by judging panels in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and each English region.
Residents can either call on 0800 111 6448 or go online at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay to submit their application.
Speaking after the announcement Mark said:
“I am encouraging all Rugby residents to apply or nominate others to take part in this historic event. Whilst the Olympic Games are taking place in London, this is a perfect opportunity for communities across the whole country to get involved. I am sure that there are many people in Rugby who would qualify as worthy Torchbearers and I hope they contact the Olympic Committee over the coming weeks”.
