One year ago, the world awoke to the horrifying news that Russia had launched an unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine. Many of us had hoped that we would never again see European cities, in a country we call a friend, scarred by war – yet sadly, for the past year, we have seen just that as Russia’s invasion has continued in the face of international condemnation.
But we have also seen great courage and resilience in the face of Putin’s atrocities. The people of Ukraine have shown unimaginable heroism in standing up for freedom and against oppression. It has reminded all of us of the need to stand together when we are threatened and I am proud of the role which all of us here in Rugby, and in the UK, have played in helping the people of Ukraine in their time of need.
We must maintain our steadfast support for those fighting for freedom in Ukraine and show Putin and those who still shamefully support him that they will never be successful. The UK has been at the forefront of these efforts to secure military and humanitarian support and all of us in Parliament are united in our view that we can – and must – be unwavering in this support until Ukraine is free.
The Homes for Ukraine Scheme has been – and continues to be – something of which we can all be proud. Nationally, we have helped provide refuge for over 100,000 Ukrainians, including over 200 here in Rugby who have made our town their home over this past year. Although I know that many will wish to return home, to a free and prosperous Ukraine, they should know that today – and always – they will be welcome here.
