Mark Pawsey MP with local students who have taken part in National Citizens Service through Rugby College
Mark Pawsey MP joined a group of inspirational local young people who gave up part of their summer holiday to make a difference in their community.
Mark met the young participants at Rugby College while they were in the final week of their local National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. During his visit, he spent time with the NCS participants and staff to hear more about supporting local young people through NCS.
The young people presented their social action project to Mark and participated in a Q&A session. They focused on two themes they are passionate about, which are climate action and SEND support, and described the project and process involved. The programme also provides a way for young people to give back to their local community and to date, young people taking part in NCS have delivered more than 15 million hours of community action.
Bethan, a young participant on NCS, said: “It allowed me to learn how to use my voice and be heard, and taught me how to be more confident.”
Angela, who also took part in NCS, said: "NCS helped me step out of my comfort zone and develop leadership skills that will be very useful in the future.”
Mark Pawsey, MP for Rugby, added: “What was really clear from speaking to Bethan, Angela and other young people from Rugby taking part in the National Citizen Service programme was their passion and interest in their social action project. I know that climate action is something which is really important to all of us and particularly to the younger generation and hearing about what they have done for their local area was really inspiring.”
Mark continued: “NCS is a really great way for young people to do something a bit different, learn some new skills and make friends for life. I’d really encourage any of my younger constituents looking for an interesting challenge which will also benefit their community to join up and take part.”
