Following an event in Parliament, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey is highlighting the importance of NHS Stop Smoking Services for those looking to quit smoking this January.
Organised by pharmaceutical manufacturer Pzifer, the Parliamentary event focused on the impact of smoking in our communities and on the NHS. It also gave an assessment of the effectiveness of different steps that local authorities and the NHS can take to help smokers quit.
Mark, along with a number of other Parliamentarians, met with representatives from the NHS and Pfizer to speak about the different support opportunities available to those wishing to quit smoking. One of the most effective is the NHS Stop Smoking Services, which offers both advice and clinical support to help smokers kick the habit.
Speaking after the event, Mark commented:
“Many people at the New Year look to try and give up smoking. It is estimated that smoking may have cost Warwickshire £123 million in 2014. This includes money spent on the NHS treating smoking related illnesses, which is estimated to have caused 2,230 premature deaths in the local area between 2012 and 2014.”
Mark continued:
“One of the best resources for those who want to quit smoking are local Stop Smoking Services, available through the NHS and their local GP. These services offer support tailored to the needs of the individual and the evidence shows that those who seek this support are four times more likely to successfully quit than those who go it alone.”
Mark concluded:
“It was a very good opportunity to speak to those who work closely within the industry about the challenges faced by those looking to give up smoking, but also to learn more about the support which exists to help them quit. I would urge anyone who wants to quit smoking to contact their GP practice and arrange a Stop Smoking appointment this New Year.”
