Last week the SUBWAY® brand, together with Heart Research UK, hosted a joint event in Parliament which was attended by local MP Mark Pawsey. In Rugby and Bulkington there are 4 SUBWAY® stores, owned and operated by independent franchisees employing approximately 40 people from the local community.
The purpose of the event was to highlight the SUBWAY® brand’s commitment to the UK Government’s Responsibility Deal. The SUBWAY® brand is the only Quick Service Restaurant brand to have endorsed eight nutrition-based Responsibility Deal pledges. The SUBWAY® brand leads its industry in the nutritional improvements that it has made across its product range which include an average 48% reduction in salt, elimination of all trans fats, as well as reducing levels of saturated fats and sugars.
Mark said:
“Subway is leading on a number of key areas. First and foremost, as a major food retailer Subway is able to help improve lives by ensuring that it provides healthy food for its customers which will have a real impact on people’s long term health. I am particularly pleased that Subway have committed early and fully to achieve improvements in nutrition, such as reducing the levels of salt and saturated fats in their products.”
Greg Madigan, Head of SUBWAY® UK and Ireland added:
“Through our commitments to the Responsibility Deal, the SUBWAY® brand has already achieved a 48% average reduction in the levels of salt across our product range. The SUBWAY® brand is the only Quick Service Restaurant brand to have endorsed eight nutrition based Responsibility Deal pledges and via our new eighth pledge the SUBWAY® brand seeks to achieve further salt reductions between now and 2017.
Mark concluded:
“The best way for us to make sure that we all eat well and enjoy a healthy life is to work together. That’s why Government, regulators and industry need to engage with both each other and the public to get the best possible outcomes. The Responsibility Deal shows that this consensual approach produces better outcomes than legislating for reforms and treating businesses with hostility.”
