Rugby MP Mark Pawsey spoke at a packaging industry event last week where he focussed on environmental issues and recycling. Mark was invited to speak, and to share his industry knowledge, as the former owner of a Rugby-based business which provided packaging to the food service industry.
Speaking at the event Mark said:
“Packaging is of vital importance in our everyday lives. It ensures that our foods and other goods are safe and protected as they make there way to our shop floors and homes here in Rugby.
However it is recognized that packaging has a significant environmental impact which is created from its manufacture and transportation through to its eventual disposal. The Prime Minster has pledged to make this the greenest government ever and one of the ways in which the Government aims to achieve this is by reducing the amount of packaging used and encouraging even more to be done in terms of recycling.”
The recycling rate in the UK for packaging waste has increased from 27% in 1997 to almost 62% in 2009.
Mark added:
“Packaging has made massive steps and progress but the view of the Government is that more can, and is, being done.”
Mark concluded:
“Essentially the Government is attempting to bring about a recycling culture to ensure a greener legacy for the generations to follow and I know that the residents of Rugby are keen recyclers and everything must be done to promote recycling initiatives.”
