Mark Pawsey MP says he hopes that World War 2 veterans in Rugby will take advantage of the funding provided through ‘Return Heroes 2’ to visit the places where they served so bravely 70 years ago. Grants are available from between £165 to £8,140 towards travel and accommodation for them or their widows, their spouse and carers, and Mark hopes that many will take up the opportunity. Veterans can either ring the helpline on 0845 0000 121 or visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/heroesreturn.
Mark said: “It is 70 years since the extraordinary Normandy Landings, which burst the Nazi defences and saved Europe from tyranny. We owe our freedom today to the selfless courage of those who fought in the World War 2. I am glad to see that so much funding has been made available to them, so that they can revisit the places where they fought.
“I know that many of those who saved Europe in World War 2 would like the opportunity to return, but feel that they cannot afford the travel, let alone other trip expenses. I would encourage everyone in that situation to get in touch with Heroes Return, because money doesn’t need to be a barrier.
“Return Heroes 2 does wonderful work, and over £28 million has been given to more than 57,000 veterans for journeys in the UK, to Europe, or beyond. It is a great fund, which is fully deserved, and I hope many people make use of it.”
