On Wednesday 6th July, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey welcomed Hillmorton Primary School Year 5 & 6 students to Parliament.
The 35 students from Hillmorton Primary School were taken on a tour of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Palace of Westminster, followed by an interactive workshop at the new Parliamentary Education Centre.
During this workshop, Mark spoke to the students about their experience and what they had learnt during their time in Parliament, and the role of an MP.
Speaking after the visit Mark said:
“I was delighted to welcome Hillmorton Primary School to Parliament last week. I always thoroughly enjoy meeting pupils in Westminster and I was particularly impressed with the students’ questions during our Q & A after our meeting”.
Mark continued:
“The pupils were able to take full advantage of Parliament’s new Education Centre by taking part in interactive workshops to explore the role, process and history of Parliament and to find out how they can engage more actively in our democracy. I would encourage every local school to organise a visit to Westminster by contacting the Education Service on 0207 219 4496.”
Mark concluded:
“Over the last few months I have had visits from almost half a dozen schools in Rugby and I am always keen to welcome school trips. It is vitally important that students can visit Parliament to experience our political system and become engaged in politics at an early age.”
Miss Brookbanks, teacher at Hillmorton Primary School, commented:
“It was a wonderful experience for the children to tour Parliament and not only to come to better understand the job of an MP but also to see them in action by sitting in during discussions in the House of Lords and House of Commons. It was a fantastic tour and the children really enjoyed meeting Mark Pawsey and being able to ask him questions about his role as local MP. “
