Rugby MP Mark Pawsey was the guest speaker at Rugby Credit Union’s AGM, held last Wednesday 2nd March at the Overslade Community Centre.
Mark spoke of his early experiences since becoming an MP and discussed the valuable work being done by the volunteers in the organisation.
Chairman Laurie Bird reported on the continued growth of Rugby Credit Union.
Laurie Brird said:
“The growth of the organization is demonstrated by the total savings and the number of loans being the highest since the credit union was formed in 2004.
The credit Union is vitally important especially in light of the massive gap in interest rates between pay-day loans, doorstep lenders and credit unions.”
Mark Pawsey said:
“I was delighted to join members of the Rugby Credit Union at their Annual General Meeting. I know just how important the organization is at providing a source of affordable finance to many people who would otherwise be driven to expensive doorstep lenders.”
Mark concluded:
“When supported by good professionals, the credit union is an example of the coalition’s vision of the ‘Big Society’ where dedicated volunteers provide an excellent service for the public. I think the Credit Union here in Rugby is a great testament to the possibilities of the Big Society ideal and should be applauded.”
The meeting concluded with a presentation to Pauline Masterman who had recently retired as office manager, having been with Rugby Credit Union since the start. The chairman paid tribute to her dedication and ‘people skills’ which had been so important in the credit union’s development."
