On Tuesday 3 September, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey joined fellow Parliamentarians and rugby league legends in Parliament to celebrate the upcoming Rugby League World Cup 2013 and discuss the home nations’ chances of success.
A total of 26 games will be played after the tournament kicks off on October 26 at the Millennium Stadium with Wales playing Italy and England playing old adversaries Australia. Both semi-finals will be played in another double header branded
“The Big Hit” at Wembley on 23 November before the winners will be crowned after the final at Old Trafford on 30 November.
Speaking after the event, Mark said
“It’s fantastic that another huge multi-national sporting tournament is coming to the UK only a year after the Olympics, and after hearing how well things are going in the England camp from Head Coach Steve McNamara, we stand a very good chance becoming World Champions once again.”
Mark continued:
“As well as a national event, the Rugby League World Cup 2013 is something we in Rugby can all look forward to. Not only is Rugby the birthplace of the game of Rugby Union but it is also the birthplace of Rugby League so I for one am really looking forward to seeing the action!”
Mark also spent time talking with rugby league legend Martin “Chariots” Offiah, who said :”by definition, World Cups are the very best a sport has to offer, and with the teams and athletes involved in this year’s tournament we are sure to see some fantastic games.”
