The opportunity to refer to events in Rugby is one that I take great pride in whilst in the Chamber. Recently in defence questions, the Minister was asked about the success the Government has had in recruiting new reservists and I spoke about the success we have seen in Rugby. D Company of the 4th Parachute Regiment is based locally and has recently recruited to beyond section strength. Rugby has a history of supporting our armed forces, with high end manufacturing at GE Energy who are building the turbines which will power the upcoming Queen Elizabeth II Aircraft carriers and Type 26 frigates.
During the coming months, the Government will call on Parliament to debate the renewal of Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent, Trident. The House of Commons is divided on this issue and any vote will be as much about internal party politics as about the defence of the nation. This is a particular issue for the official Opposition, who have no coherent defence policy and a leader who would not only give up Britain’s nuclear deterrent, but also believes that we should withdraw from our place on the world stage by pulling out of NATO. Indeed, we have recently seen their former Shadow Defence Secretary, Maria Eagle MP, removed for being in favour of Trident.
The first duty of any government must be to the security of its citizens. Having considered the issues at hand and the many different opinions that local residents have brought to my attention, I believe that the security of Rugby and Britain is best served by renewing Trident.
