Local MP Mark Pawsey has welcomed the news that unemployment is continuing to fall across the Rugby Constituency, according to today's figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
ONS figures show the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance across Rugby has fallen to 909. The number of claimants is 525 lower than in June 2013, 36.6 per cent lower than a year ago
Encouragingly youth unemployment has also fallen by more than 48% since this time last year, with claimants down from 350 in June 2013 to 180 in June 2014.
Mark Pawsey said: “This is yet more evidence that the Government’s long term economic plan is working for people in Rugby and I am particularly pleased the number of young people claiming out of work benefits has fallen so significantly. Record numbers of apprenticeships and vocational qualifications are helping more young people in Rugby to get off to a good start in life and earn a secure stable pay-packet.
“Nationally, we have seen the unemployment rate drop to 6.5%, with 1.8 million more people in work than at the General Election in May 2010. We can never afford to be complacent and helping more people to find work will remain a top priority. But these latest figures are encouraging.”
“ONS figures show that the number of people in full time work is at a record high. Across the UK, the number claiming Key Out of Work Benefits is at the lowest level since records began in 1999 and whilst there is still more to be done, I am pleased the government’s long term economic plan is working and that more people than ever before have the security of a job.”
