Rugby voters concern over how pensioners and savers are being affected by the recession

Rugby Conservatives are carrying out regular surveys. The subject during April and May was the impact of the current economic conditions on savers and pensioners. The aim was to find out about Rugby people's views and respond to them. The survey was carried out during April and May online, on the doorstep and by telephone.
Mark Pawsey, who is the Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Rugby explained:
"Savers have suffered from the reductions in interest rates and pensioners from a decade of Gordon Brown's tax raids. Both groups are forgotten victims of the current economic problems. We wanted to see what Rugby people thought about the effect of the recession on savers and pensioners and a huge majority thought these groups have been badly hit."
Mark added:
"The conservatives have pledged to support savers by abolishing income tax on savings for basic rate taxpayers. After all, most people have already paid tax on the money they put aside in a savings account. People overwhelmingly agreed that tax should not be paid on savings. At the same time to help many pensioners who have saved to give themselves a little extra during their retirement we will raise the pensioners' personal allowance by £2000. This was thought to be a good proposal by a massive majority."
Mark concluded
"In the current economic climate we need to give people an incentive to save because as a country we are in danger of being swamped by debt. The Government is currently borrowing at the rate of half a billion pounds a day. Four out of every five people we spoke to said that taking on more debt is not the solution to the very serious problems the country faces."
