Mark Pawsey, MP for Rugby and Bulkington, last week joined members of the local Indian community for their annual Sewa event in aid of the ‘Coventry and Warwickshire Breast Cancer Unit Appeal’. Sewa is an Indian tradition where people volunteer their time and resources for the benefit of others.
This year’s Sewa event was a Walkathon around Draycote Water with participants walking, running or cycling around the reservoir to raise money for charity. Despite awful weather 79 people took part and raised over £800 to support a new Breast Cancer Unit for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW).
After the event Mark said:
“It was a great pleasure to join Rugby’s Indian community and support this event. I am delighted that there was a great turnout for the Sewa Walkathon despite the bad weather and I am pleased that over £800 was raised for a new Breast Cancer Unit for UHCW. The event was held at Draycote Water where I enjoyed walking around with other fundraisers. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious vegetarian picnic together whilst sheltering from the rain!”
Mark concluded:
“I found it particularly rewarding to join the local Indian community and take part in the Sewa Walkathon helping to raise money for a new Breast Cancer Unit for UHCW. Breast Cancer amongst the Asian community has been increasing and this cause has helped raise awareness of Breast Cancer amongst the local community and will also help to provide treatment.”
After the event Kishor Mistry (organiser) said:
“The weather was not kind, but of the 90 present, 79 people were determined to participate in walking or running around the 5 mile course. This year we were fortunate to have the MP for Rugby, Mark Pawsey, participating in the event. Mark enjoyed the event and we think he enjoyed the food too! All participants felt they had contributed to a very worthwhile cause, and enjoyed the ‘picnic in the park’ afterwards.”
