Local MP Mark Pawsey is holding a public meeting on the upcoming EU referendum on Wednesday the 6th April. The meeting is being held in the Benn Hall between 6.30pm and 8pm.
Mark will chair the meeting and representatives from both the Remain and Leave campaigns have been invited to address the questions of the audience. The meeting will provide the opportunity to learn more about the arguments on both sides of the debate.
Mark will chair the meeting and has invited an expert speaker from each side, with former Conservative MEP Philip Bushill-Matthews speaking on behalf of the Remain campaign. Philip was an MEP for the West Midlands between 1999 and 2009 and served in a number of positions in the European Parliament, including Leader of the Conservative Group.
The Leave campaign will be represented by UKIP’s James Carver MEP, who has represented the West Midlands since 2014 and currently sits on the Foreign Affairs committee in the European Parliament.
Mark commented:
“Following the Prime Minister’s renegotiation, the Conservative Party has delivered on its manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on Britain’s future in Europe. It is now for every individual to decide whether they want to ‘Remain’ in the European Union or ‘Leave’ in the first referendum on this issue in over forty years.”
Mark continued:
“In recent weeks, whilst out talking to Rugby residents I have both spoken to a lot of people and received a lot of correspondence from local people keen to learn more about the arguments on both sides of the EU debate. It is clear to me that there are a lot of questions they want to ask and many people would like to hear the facts on this issue.”
Mark concluded:
“I am very pleased that Philip and James have agreed to attend this meeting and present both sides of the debate to local people. Both have represented the West Midlands in Europe and have strong views on what is best for the future of our relationship with the EU. Between them, they have over twelve years’ experience in the European Parliament and I know they will bring this expertise to the public meeting.”
