Rugby’s MP, Mark Pawsey has welcomed the news that former semi-professional speedway rider and a past Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Tony Gillias, has been elected Chairman of speedway’s governing body in Great Britain, the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB).
Mark said: “I am thrilled that Councillor Tony Gillias has been elected chairman of the SCB and I feel certain that his considerable knowledge in local government and his years of riding on the track will certainly be put to good use during his term as Chairman of the governing body for speedway racing in Great Britain.”
“As a young lad growing up in Binley Woods, a trip to see the Bees riding at Brandon, was a real treat for me in my youth, and this was one of the reasons I launched the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Speedway in Parliament last year, and it was a pleasure to welcome Tony to this launch during his term as Mayor, as Speedway is once again a growing sport which he and I have a very keen interest in.”
